1-54 Marrakech

Contemporary African art, at home in Marrakech.

Every February, 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair takes over La Mamounia. Founded by Touria El Glaoui in 2013 and named for the 54 countries of Africa, the fair began in London and has held a Marrakech edition since 2018.

It is a deliberately small fair. The 2026 edition brought together 22 galleries and more than 60 artists, with Moroccan galleries such as Loft Art Gallery and La Galerie 38 alongside international names. Booths sit in the hotel’s salons and gardens, so you see the work in rooms rather than white boxes.

The fair spills out into the city. Gallery Night opens shows across Gueliz, DaDa in the medina hosts special projects, and talks, performances and satellite exhibitions run through the week.

What we look for: craft and material in the work itself. Cut paper, clay, textile, colour that belongs to this light. Plan a long weekend, see the fair in the morning and the city in the afternoon. The next edition is in February 2027.
