Our ethos

Everything we make is made in Morocco, by hand, by artisans we work with directly. We hold our ateliers to Moroccan law and to our own standards, and we tell our clients exactly how their pieces are made.

Robert Emile was founded to celebrate craftsmanship. Today we work with over a hundred craftsmen and women across the Kingdom, from zellige cutters to the weavers of the Atlas Mountains. Fair, legal and lasting work for them is the foundation of everything we sell.

Moroccan regulation

Working within Moroccan law

Morocco has a clear framework for its craft sector and the people who work in it. Our production follows it, in our own ateliers and with every workshop we partner with.

Law 50-17Craft activities

The law organising Morocco’s craft sector. It created the National Crafts Register, which gives each artisan, cooperative and craft business an official status and identification number.

Law 65-99The Labour Code

Sets working hours, the minimum wage, paid leave, health and safety, and the protection of minors. Forced labour is prohibited.

AMO · CNSSSocial coverage

Registration on the National Crafts Register opens mandatory health insurance to artisans and their families through the national social security fund.

Our principles

How we make

01Made in Morocco

Every tile, rug and piece we sell is made in Morocco, in our own ateliers or in workshops we partner with directly.

02Fair pay and conditions

Our artisans are paid fairly for their skill and time, never below the national minimum wage, with working hours and leave set by the Labour Code.

03Women-led ateliers

Our rugs are woven by a team of eight Amazigh women, under our charity, in their own village in the Atlas Mountains, on ancestral looms.

04Traceable materials

We source our materials ourselves: 100% New Zealand Merino for our rugs, Moroccan clay and natural pigment glazes for our zellige.

05No child labour

No child works on a Robert Emile piece. We apply the Labour Code’s protection of minors in every atelier we work with.

06Heritage techniques

Zellige is hand-cut and fired in beehive kilns. Rugs are hand-knotted on traditional looms. We keep these methods alive rather than replace them.

07Environmental care

Natural materials, small batches and made-to-order production, so we only make what has been commissioned.

08Transparency to clients

Every quote and tear sheet records where and how a piece is made. Ask us anything about your order and we will tell you.

Enquiries

Ask us how it was made

Where a piece was made, who made it and what it is made from. We are happy to answer any question about our production.
