The Makers

The pleasure is in the making

A hand-stitched line has a different energy from a perfect one. It carries a decision, a rhythm, a small trace of the person who made it. That is where our interest in The Makers begins.

Based in Sidi Ghanem, the studio approaches clothing through embroidery, patchwork and combinations of pattern. Familiar shapes become a starting point for something more individual: unisex pieces intended to work across seasons, with craftsmanship giving everyday garments their distinction. There is a showroom to explore, but the workshops are an equally important part of the story. The distance between looking at an object and understanding how it is made becomes a little shorter when you try the process yourself.

For anyone interested in interiors, there is plenty to take from this approach. The judgement involved in placing one fabric against another is close to the judgement involved in putting a room together. Colour, texture and scale have to find a relationship.

We like the idea of leaving with more than a purchase. A new appreciation for a technique can travel further than the thing itself. Go with time to look at the stitching, ask about the work and follow whatever catches your eye.

Check the workshop calendar before you visit.
